ah spring. The birds, the bees, the sounds of RR cursing while putting a Jag IRS back together...

I have fucked up on one important point: the suspension height adjust (the bellcranks you can see) is capable of going down further than the half-shafts are capable of running. Which means I’ll have to set the limit switches just right when I attach the servos so as not to break/jam my axles while running. The simple fix that should allow me to run in Tall Mode better would be to take a page from the Land Rover/M151 MUTT handbook and put on a check-strap or chain on each side. Prevents over-extension, allows top post to be pushed down farther for higher loaded ride height while still running safe. Of course, I also need to get E-type springs, because the XJS ones are hard like rock.

ah and of course the XJ40 uses the single spring IRS because I have found those to always be cushy, and always in boneyards

This is very cushy... when under a 4000lb+ vehicle. With my tiny little 2500lb toy truck, not so much. Fortunately, brand new springs for an E are like $40 each, so I can full convert the system for less than $200 in parts.

You will also note that I’m converted for running FERD pattern wheels rather than the chebby 4.75 pattern I started with.

excellent. Good for those FERD steelies I expect to see on there. I will look for some hubcaps for you this weekend up in old car playland (up the coast again) so you dont change your mind.

I’m currently planning to get a set of Draglite knockoffs (Jegs Sportlite) and make plates or tabs to TIG weld on to use my original dog dishes. I’ll paint the webs body color, leave the outer rim glossy aluminum. This:

Plus this:

Just like a classy steelie, half the weight, no corrosion.

Yep, got all four. For a bit there, I was toying with using ‘61/’62 comet turbine dog dishes. I still may get a set and swap occasionally for the lulz - since they’re interchangeable.

Ill poke around and see if I can find a set - if it is Ford or Buick I know there is too much stuff up there for them

What wheels and caps do you have in mind? Dog dish or full?

Here’s a nice set of Galaxie caps:

I found a set of GT Rallye wheels here locally that I’m thinking about for the Fairlane, so my dog dishes may be available.

Look further along in the comment thread - I’m planning on drag alloys with the original dog dishes. You should know by now the “normal solution” is not my style.

Oh, I’ve figured that out. I saw 505s encouragement to run steelies & was curious what the possibilities were. I’ll keep an eye open for caps as well.

The easiest steelies to get/work with would be the Wheelvintiques ones, given they have both gennies and smoothies that would work. Caps of a 40 Ford style would work of course...
